Don't be an echo

Finding your unique voice in a sea of sameness

I write weekly about the strategies, habits, and tactics around cultivating the connections that matter to you.

When people like Maya come to me, they're ready to dive in—time, money, effort, they're all in. But there's a hitch. Despite their eagerness, they often find themselves echoing the same tones as everyone else in their field. It's a common predicament: standing out in a profession where many sound remarkably similar.

A Tale of Echoes

I recall a client, let's call her Maya, a dedicated financial advisor who was all set to make her mark. She had the expertise, the drive, and the commitment. Yet, every time she spoke or wrote about her work, she mirrored the industry jargon and safe narratives that made her indistinguishable from her peers. Maya's challenge wasn't her willingness to invest in her growth; it was finding and embracing her unique voice amidst the chorus of conformity.

The Breakthrough

Our turning point came when I encouraged Maya to share stories not just about financial success but about her personal philosophy on wealth, her own financial journey, and the lessons learned along the way. This shift from a purely professional narrative to a more personal, authentic storytelling approach transformed how her clients and peers perceived her. Maya began to stand out because she was no longer just another financial advisor; she was Maya, the advisor with a relatable story, genuine insights, and a distinct voice.

It’s not always comfortable. Growing up with the perception that anything “nerdy” got you stuffed in a locker, we were pressured to “fit in.” It took time for me to start sharing my true self (ok, it also has taken a lot of time for me to figure out my true self, but this isn’t therapy). But as I started talking about the books I was reading, the strange YouTube holes I’ve gone down, and my love of anything spicy - people started responding.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

Why Your Unique Voice Matters

  1. Authenticity Attracts: People are drawn to authenticity. It builds trust and fosters deeper connections.

  2. Personal Stories Resonate: Your personal experiences and insights add depth to your professional identity, making you more memorable.

  3. Differentiation: In a crowded field, your unique voice and authentic self are your most significant differentiators.

Your Action Plan

Reflect on what makes you, you. What are your stories, beliefs, and experiences that can add a new dimension to your professional identity? Start weaving these elements into your communications, be it through social media, networking, or client interactions. The goal is to be professionally proficient but personally profound.

Remember, the world doesn't need another echo; it needs your voice. Start sharing it, one story at a time.
