Have I got something for you

What would be of value to you is of value to them

I write weekly about the strategies, habits, and tactics around cultivating the connections that matter to you.

If you happen to have written a mainstream book for expecting parents, I’m about to offend you. Sorry in advance.

When my wife and I were expecting our first, I did what most clueless partners do - pick up a book and hope that it tells you “what to do.” Feel even more clueless. Ignore all the advice from your friends that these books rarely do anything but confirm you’re clueless, and read another. Repeat three or four times.

Then I did something even dorkier. I made a survey.

Around ~20 friends filled out the survey with their parenting advice. It was all incredibly insightful and helpful for our early years.

Years later, it’s still precious. Why?

Because I did something even dorkier. I made a slideshow.

Patrick Ewers first introduced me to the idea of a “value payload” - a pre-created item readily available to share with people who, well… would find it valuable.

Whenever I meet someone who is expecting, I immediately follow up with the PDF, along with my top two insights from the pages of first-person experiences.

Does it have anything with what either of us do for work? No. Does it have anything to do with the primary objective of our meeting? Nope.

But when you are building relationships for the long term, it’s all about being trustworthy, supportive, and of value to each other.

Taking Action

What are the troves of knowledge you’ve built up that’s locked up in your head?

What are the hard-earned bits of wisdom that you’ve picked up that would be helpful to people you encounter?

A list of recommended wines (or for me, hot sauces)? A database of consultants you trust? Your own guide to “finding your purpose?”

Those are three examples that I’ve personally created and given out consistently. What value do you have to share with the world?

Whatever it may be, have it ready to go as an email template, private link, PDF, etc that you can easily zap over the moment you identify someone who would benefit from it.

If you found this valuable, have you snagged my course on cultivating your network?

“What do I do with my hands?” wasn’t a problem for me.

I’ve spent the past 12 years helping people like you grow their businesses and careers by cultivating the relationships that matter. I took everything I’ve learned and practiced, and put it in a professionally produced online course.
